NUEL, and their international partner, GGTech are leading hosts of university esports tournaments across Europe. Our new partnership will raise the standard of opportunities for Confetti students interested in a career in esports.
Who are NUEL and GGTech?
NUEL (formerly the National University Esports League) was founded in 2010 by Loughborough undergraduates and now hosts the largest UK and Ireland university tournaments with Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports; it supports hundreds of university society events across the country, and develops student talent who are now working throughout the esports industry. GGTech is a technology company with projects related to videogames, esports and education. In the esports area, GGTech is one of the largest companies in the Spanish-speaking world and the largest in university competitions throughout Europe. NUEL and GGTech work together to deliver the Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports Masters European Series, a collaboration with, you guessed it, Amazon!
What the partnership means for us and our students
As part of our new partnership, we will be working much more closely with NUEL’s team, and they will even be moving their head office to our Confetti campus in Nottingham. For NUEL, the decision is a no brainer, as they’ll be able to tap into our 25+ years of industry expertise and contacts across all major production technologies within live events, TV, film, music, and games. They’ll also be able to level up their broadcast production values through access to our top-specification facilities, including our brand new £5million esports hub, Confetti X!
As part of one of the UK’s most popular universities, Nottingham Trent University, we already run esports production courses at college and undergraduate level, with a new postgraduate course coming online soon. NUEL and GGTech will support our team with new course development and access to esports specialist guest lecturers, and our close relationship will help us to further develop our Further Education and Higher Education provision.
Our new partners will also help raise the standard of opportunities for students interested in a career in esports, with NUEL and GGTech set to offer lots of amazing Do It For Real opportunities to Confetti students studying on a wide range of courses, from Esports Production to Content Creation, Virtual Production, Graphic Design and more.
Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports work experience opportunities
NUEL currently delivers GGTech’s Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports tournament in the UK and Ireland. Our new partnership aims to strengthen the competition, get new participants involved, and raise the standard of opportunities for students interested in a career in esports. Confetti students in particular will benefit from regular paid opportunities working on many event broadcasts for tournaments nationwide, while GGTech will do likewise internationally, for example with collaborations on the broadcast of the pan-European Amazon UNIVERSITY Esports Masters competition.
Some of our BSc (Hons) Esports Production students recently got the chance to work with NUEL and GGTech out in Alicante, found out about their adventure here.
Confetti X
The new partnership comes as we prepare to open Confetti X – a new £5m, 14,000 sq. ft dedicated esports production complex in Nottingham. Confetti X brings together our many years of expertise in live events, content creation, streaming, and competitive gaming. The complex is a space for Confetti students to access the very best facilities and technology for esports production, and other emerging technologies like virtual production.
Confetti X will play host to amateur and professional esports tournaments, coaching and training for teams, and other live events. It will become NUEL and GG Tech’s default UK venue, where they will host major university esports tournaments at the facilities, allowing our students to run the production of the event, with the primary goal of increasing the awareness and accessibility of careers in the esports industry.
Making Nottingham a major hub for UK esports
We caught up with our Chief Executive, Craig Chettle MBE, to find out more about the significance of this partnership, not just to Confetti but to Nottingham and the UK:
“Alongside our longstanding partnership with the British Esports Federation, this exciting initiative with GGTech and NUEL will further support our mission to shape the future of esports education.
“We are excited by the opportunities set to be created and are thrilled that NUEL has chosen our campus and Nottingham as its UK base.
“Our partnership highlights shared ambitions to help advance esports as an inclusive and innovative industry, and I am certain that, together with our new esports production complex Confetti X this is another step towards making Nottingham a hub of the UK’s esports industry”.
