Studying for a VFX career

As with most creative industry sectors, there are multiple paths of entry for a career in VFX. Our courses aim to give you the technical skills expected when working in industry – and due to the multiple pathway option, you can pick a style of studying that works for you.

A two year foundation degree is a great choice if you want to have the option to graduate with a Level 5 qualification and start your creative career early. With an accessible UCAS tariff – this type of degree is perfect for you if you prefer a more practical approach to your studies. After completing two years you will graduate with an FdSc qualification and choose whether you want to continue and enroll on a top up year for a full BSc qualification or whether you would rather stop your education and start your creative career.

A three year Bachelor degree is a great choice if you’re looking to gain a full Level 6 qualification. With a higher UCAS tariff – this type of degree is perfect for you if you prefer a more theoretical approach to your studies combined with significant elements of practice. After graduating you will be able to progress onto a postgraduate course or start your creative career.

Previous students from our VFX degrees are now working at companies, such as Framestore, Double Negative and Pinewood Studios.

Do It For Real

Industry experience lies at the heart of all our courses and our students have access to work experience opportunities and guest lectures from some of the biggest names in VFX.

Not even the pandemic could slow our students down, with some of our VFX cohort getting involved with the development and production of the Wollaton Watch programme as part of the Nottingham Festival of Science and Curiosity.

The programme was also picked up by local TV station Notts TV for broadcasting. You can catch-up with the whole series on YouTube now.

We also invited in some of the top names in the VFX industry to speak to our students virtually about their careers:

  • Tim Allen – Key Animator (Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs, Frankenweenie, Chuck Steel, Corpse Bride, Shaun the Sheep)
  • Michael Morgan – 3D Animator (Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Groot and Rocket the Raccoon, Black Panther, Venom)
