Event Management students help usher in the festive season

Monday December 12, 2022

Our BA (Hons) Event Management students recently helped organise and deliver a series of Christmas lights switch on events in Nottinghamshire.

Students have been supporting Broxtowe Borough Council in the town centres’ of Stapleford, Eastwood and Beeston, which took place over a series of Saturdays in late November – early December.

The opportunity, organised by Confetti Work Placement Manager, Lucy Greaves and Broxtowe Borough Council’s Events Team, saw students learn how to prepare and put on a local council event for the public.

As part of BA (Hons) Event Management, Confetti students gain experience working on a variety of events; from music and comedy, theatre productions, to outdoor festivals, esports tournaments, community and corporate events. We work with the likes of Rough Trade, BBC, Just the Tonic, and artists and organisations from across the UK and wider.

Prior to working on the lights events as Event Assistants, participating students were visited in class by Alex Khan, who led a session on event planning and safety. Following the successful events campaign, we caught up with Alex to get his feedback on the students performance:

“It was great seeing the students get involved in the many roles that are undertaken when delivering events. They gained hands on experience of stage managing, attended security and first aid briefings, supported street theatre acts, were involved in the siting of infrastructure and presented a professional face to the public.

“I hope that they gained a valuable insight into the world of outdoor events and that this knowledge will give them a grounding that will support further learning. We are looking forward to working with the students again on future events” – Alex Khan, Cultural Services Manager, Broxtowe Borough Council.

“The events are lots of fun! I have learned the importance of crowd management and timings. It’s great to see how different events work, the preparation and planning documents will help with my theory work”. Siana Galligan, BA (Hons) Event Management, Year 1.

“Alex and the team at Broxtowe Events welcomed our Event Management students with open arms! In providing work opportunity in their Christmas Lights Switch On events, our students have been able to gain invaluable experience which complements and will enhance their studies. I and them are looking forward to the future opportunities” – Andy Atkin, Confetti Senior Lecturer, HE Event Management and Production
