In December 2019, some of our degree-level students studying Television Production Technology filmed the NTU Christmas Carol.
Last December, a small crew of our degree-level Television Production Technology students set up cameras and mixing gear in the Newton Building at the City Campus. They then worked through the evening and night to film the event.
Television Production Technology course leader, Kris Hayden finds this to be one of the most enjoyable projects that the students are able to get involved in.
“Of the many projects we undertake on the Television Production Technology course, both myself and the students particularly enjoy the NTU Christmas Carol. Not only is it a great event, but NTU give us enough creative freedom on the night that we can use a whole variety of kit, and produce it our own way, giving the students full control on the night.”
The event itself consists of NTU Music ensembles performing a selection of uplifting Christmas favourites for everyone to enjoy. Featuring talented students, staff and members of the local community, this popular concert is a great way to celebrate the festive season, and the end of term.
The 2019 performance was second-year student Lewis Fletcher’s second year filming this event.
“I chose to participate in the NTU Christmas Carol because it’s a nice, fun experience where there isn’t a lot of pressure on you for how short the event is. I liked the fact that it was a small team where you would all be involved and it would feel like a tight community for the project. The fact that it was a chance to show off your capability and skills really drew me in as when you’re working in class you may not have the chance to show off skills, but you can at an event such as this.
“I have done this event for two years running because it was fun to do. The experience improved my confidence when working for a client, and I improved my management skills. It also helped that the production was broadcast live, because it gives you a taste of a real world event. It’s something that anyone in the industry can benefit from and you learn to work in a group. After a year of honing my skills, I improved when filming the second time.”
