Access & Inclusion, part of Student Services, have put together information for Confetti students and staff to raise awareness of neurodiversity and support available as part of Neurodiversity Celebration Week.
What is neurodiversity?
Depending on how our brains are wired, we think, move, process information, and communicate in different ways. Many people use neurodiversity as an umbrella term to describe alternative thinking styles such as Dyslexia, DCD (Dyspraxia), Dyscalculia, Autism and ADHD.
Approximately 15-20% of the population has a neurological difference. Instead of labelling people with deficits or disorders, when we use the term neurodiversity, we take a balanced view of an individual’s unique strengths and challenges. Many challenges that neurodivergent people face are more to do with the environment and systems they are placed in, often designed by a majority population.
When we talk about inclusion, we refer to a society where neurological differences are recognised and respected. At Confetti, we strive for this.
What is Neurodiversity Celebration Week?
This week was founded in 2018 by Siena Castellon. You sign up for the online events run by the official campaign.
You can also access all of the recordings of last year’s events.
Neurodiverse and want to share your story?
If you are studying or working at Confetti, the Access & Inclusion team would love to hear your stories. Their aim is to celebrate diversity, disability, neurodiversity and SEND by displaying individual experiences as part of this year’s Celebrate Showcase in July. If you would like to share your story, please contact lrc@confetti.ac.uk with the subject line ‘Celebrate’.
