Healthier Planet, Healthier You

This month at Confetti we’re exploring how we can make changes in our lives that help us make healthier choices for ourselves and the environment.

Reducing animal product consumption

Animal farming contributes 15% of global greenhouse gas emissions and is a leading cause of deforestation and biodiversity loss.

You don’t have to go completely vegan to make a difference. Why not start with a meat-free Monday? There’s lots of really easy and quick recipes you can try from The Student Food Project. It’s also a great way to discover new and healthy foods that you might not have known you like!

Staff members can also try the vegan specials running in Antenna during the first two weeks of January.

Reducing waste

If your New Year’s resolution is to drink more water we encourage students and staff to bring their own reusable water bottles to help us reduce waste on campus. You can also bring reusable coffee cups to use in our cafes.

We’ve also removed hand towels from the bathrooms on campus, saving 600 bags of rubbish from reaching landfill every year.

Greener ways to travel

Did you know that as a Confetti student or staff member based in Nottingham, you can hire a bike for the rest of the academic year from just £29. Bikes can be paid for and collected from the NTU Cycle Hub, located behind the NTSU. There is a £60 deposit which is refunded when the bike is returned at the end of July.

If you are a Confetti staff member you can also hire an ebike for £75 (with a £125 deposit) for a term.

If you’re travelling to Confetti Nottingham via an NCT bus more than 3 days a week, you can save over £50 by purchasing an NCT Bus Pass for £125.

If you want to move a little more in 2025, you can also try getting off your bus or tube a stop or two earlier and walking the rest of the way.

Volunteering

You can develop new skills, get into nature and make a positive difference by volunteering. There’s lots of opportunities to support local green spaces in Nottingham – take a look at Nottingham Green Guardians to find out about opportunities near you.

If you’re based in London, there’s plenty of charities to choose from. The Conservation Volunteers is a fantastic resource for finding activities taking place near you.

NTU Green Rewards

Want to get rewards for being more sustainable? Staff and HE students can use the free Green Rewards app to log their green actions and earn points to win prizes. Just sign up using your NTU email.

These are just some of the actions you can be taking for a healthier planet and a healthier you.
