Confetti graduate supports Vicky McClure TV production “Without Sin”

Ben Raven with Left Bank Pictures at Antenna Nottingham

Television Production graduate, Ben Raven, has been working as a Camera Trainee on the production of “Without Sin”, a four-part mini series starring Line of Duty star, and friend of Confetti, Vicky McClure.

In Autumn 2021, Left Bank Pictures (The Crown, The Halcyon and Outlander) and BYO Films began pre-production on the new ITV drama, “Without Sin”. The series stars Vicky McClure in the lead role as Stella Tomlinson. Stella is mother to 14-year old daughter, Maisy, who she finds dead at their family home with bloodied, hooded figure, Charles Stone, standing over her. The show focuses on Stella’s life three years on from the loss of her teenage daughter and how she is still hostage to her grief. The psychological thriller was written by Nottingham-born Frances Poletti (Charlie Says, Miss Todd), who created the series for McClure and Johnny Harris, last seen together on-screen in This is England 86.

Without Sin is a truly local production with Ben and many members of the cast and crew hailing from Nottingham and the East Midlands. McClure herself is a Nottingham native and a great friend of Confetti, having appeared as part of Industry Week in recent years, she continues to be a great champion of our institution:

“I am very proud to be an ambassador of Confetti, so much creativity in Nottingham comes from this amazing place!”

Made in Nottingham

Ben Raven initially started working in the locations department where he was responsible for scouting potential locations and supporting the main location team, he was later taken on as a camera trainee. Whilst on location, Ben and the production team have been based at Antenna Nottingham, a media production centre for enterprise, creativity and innovation. Antenna Nottingham has close ties to Confetti, particularly as it is based within the same building as Confetti HQ and the Notts TV studio, with an entrance located on Beck Street. Antenna Nottingham includes office and studio spaces, spaces for co-working, meeting rooms and more for a range of different-sized businesses. One of the benefits to having Antenna so close to home are the opportunities for hands-on work experience and freelance jobs for our students and graduates:

“I met Ben on a job working for Element Pictures at the beginning of the year, so when his details landed on my desk I knew he’d be a good fit for us.” – Emma Ellis, Left Bank Pictures.

Ben’s experience

Left Bank Pictures recently wrapped “Without Sin” with the series soon to air on ITV in early 2022. With the show’s Production Team now moving onto pastures new, we caught up with Ben Raven to ask him about his experience:

“The last few months working with Left Bank Pictures have been a great pleasure. I have had the best time working on Without Sin with a superb cast and crew. I have been given a huge insight into the TV industry and I have made many connections during this shoot whilst working closely with a number of different departments.

“My experience as camera trainee has greatly improved my technical skills and working on a production this big coming out of University is a huge honour, and particularly for it being based in my home town of Nottingham. It is sad that is has come to an end, but I can’t wait for it to be aired and for everyone to see the show!”
