Hayley Williams producer, Steph Marziano, teaches production masterclass for Confetti students

Monday February 6, 2023

On Friday 3 February, Hayley Williams producer, Steph Marziano taught a production masterclass to our BSc (Hons) Sound Engineering and Audio Production students. Renowned for her creative approach to production, she encouraged students to “throw out the rule book”.

Steph Marziano is a writer, producer and mixer who has worked on several well-established projects including the most recent Hayley Williams album: ‘Petals For Armour’, where she helped co-write three of the songs. Born in Philadelphia, Steph moved to Liverpool where she studied Sound Technology, before moving to London where she since has gone on to be a part of numerous projects including Kasabian’s no.1 album ‘For Crying Out Loud’ and her first produced, engineered and mixed album ‘We Used To Bloom’ by Denai Moore.

Steph worked with BSc (Hons) Sound Engineering and Audio Production students to transform a demo into a fully produced song, with a focus on showing them her process. Steph is renowned for her creative approach to production, so she focused on teaching students how to create unique sounds, explaining how experimenting with non-traditional studio techniques can lead to exciting sonic characteristics for the track. Steph helped guide the students through the creation of new layers and parts, pushing them to “throw the rule book out” and go with what felt right to them.

We had a brief chat with Steph, you can see the full video over on our Instagram here.

“It’s been really fun! I wish we had more time because we’ve been doing loads of great stuff with the students. They’ve been really awesome and receptive; I’d love to come back.”Steph Marziano

“Having Steph come in was an absolutely amazing experience. It’s great to have female representation from the industry. She showed us some awesome techniques and was an excellent and super patient mentor to us all.”Laura Warren, BSc Audio and Music Technology YR3
