Twelve of our BSc (Hons) Film Production Technology students recently went to New York City for a trip with staff to explore the culture and the film world across the Atlantic!
This is a return to New York for Confetti film students for the first time since January 2020. Students touched down in the cultural capital of the world for a week of exploring, photography and creative inspiration.
Students visited the Museum of Moving Image to learn about the history of film and to see props and costumes from the production of the hit TV show, The Walking Dead. The group explored the sights of the five boroughs, visited the Statue of Liberty, the Museum of Modern Art, walked the Brooklyn Bridge and the 9/11 memorial.
We caught up with Charlotte Southwell, a 2nd year BSc (Hons) Film Production Technology student who went on the trip to find out what the experience meant to her:
New York is the backdrop of so many huge blockbusters – why was it important to you to go from a film and culture perspective?
“It’s one of those places that are so iconic and it was a chance I couldn’t pass on, from being able to go to areas that we recognise from our favourite films as well as going to the Museum of the Moving Image where they were showcasing displays of old cameras, prosthetics and costumes, old merch from major films, props etc. There were also a lot of interactive sections that were great to mess about with; from old film viewing machines to an ADR suite, it was great fun and I absolutely loved the muppets section – there was an interactive activity where you were able to record yourself puppeteering a couple of puppets to an old audio.”
What was your favourite part of the trip?
“Definitely seeing the Statue of Liberty and actually getting to go on the island. I also loved the SUMMIT One Vanderbilt where I could see the whole city including the Chrysler & Empire State Buildings. Other stand outs include getting the chance to see famous art pieces that we’ve seen our whole lives at The Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), like “The Starry Night” [Vincent van Gogh] and “The Persistence of Memory” [Salvador Dalí].”
What did you take away from the experience?
“This trip gave us the opportunity to have a different environment to practice with our cameras. Walking around the city to see what interesting shots we could gather was a great ‘jumping into the deep end learning experience… I think by the end of the trip I finally got some sort of grasp on the subway system.”
