Two time Grammy Award winner, Adrian Bushby, visited Confetti to teach a masterclass in the art of recording and production for our BSc (Hons) Audio and Music Technology students.
About Adrian Bushby:
Adrian is a professional engineer, mixer and producer based in London, UK. He’s worked with countless internationally renowned artists throughout his career including the likes of Foo Fighters, Muse, The Darkness and many more.
In 2008, Adrian won his first Grammy for his work on the Foo Fighter’s ‘Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace’ before going on to win a second for Muse’s multi-platinum album ‘Resistance’.
Recording rock:
Working in our state-of-the-art Studio 1 facility (find out more about our studios here), our students spent an entire day taking part in a collaborative experience with Adrian, recording and producing a brand-new rock track from the ground up. This gave students a rare (or not so rare at Confetti) opportunity to learn from an industry professional in an environment that wouldn’t be dissimilar to a real-world recording session.
Drawing from Adrian’s many years of experience in the studio, students were able to ask for questions and advice on a variety of production and recording techniques including, how to get the best take from the artist, microphone placement, the use of outboard equipment and more.
Audio and Music Technology student, Molly, said “Had a great day working with Adrian, and found it really inspiring. He pushed me out my comfort zone with stuff, but it helped me a lot. Adrian also told us all to never be afraid to ask for help with something, as that’s how you learn“.
With a track now recorded, Adrian will be returning to teach an online mixing class, instructing students on how to use the techniques he uses when mixing for big acts like the The Darkness and Feeder. During the session, we caught up Adrian to get his thoughts on the facilities at Confetti, here’s what he said – “Very impressed. The studio is super well set up and very well equipped. The students are working very well and professionally. Amazing building, amazing place to learn, very impressed“.
Curriculum Lead of Music, John Meredith, said “The whole day was a fascinating insight into not only the technical aspects of engineering and production, but the soft skills Adrian had in spades to ensure he got the best out of the student engineers and the musicians: a literal masterclass in people skills and we cant wait to have him back for the mix“.
