The COVID-19 pandemic has temporarily impacted the live events industry in 2020, but that hasn’t stopped our Live & Technical Events students from working hard behind the scenes and continuing their training.
Since the start of the academic year, students have had countless opportunities to get hands-on with specialist tech in Metronome – our live events hub in Nottingham – and help produce and crew a series of live-streamed events, including BBC Introducing and the release of the Confetti Single 2020 – James Burt’s ‘Dance in the Rain’.
Student, Lucas White explains how it’s been a challenging but rewarding time to study at Confetti.
He said: “This year has been different because we have a larger focus on live streaming and broadcasting audio rather than to a physical crowd, which has been different but interesting. Studying during a pandemic is definitely challenging but am still glad to have the space and get physical hands-on experience even when the live events sector remains closed.”
Adapting to the current restrictions and finding innovative ways to introduce work experience in the course has been a priority for course leader Rob Baldock:
“At Confetti we have been working hard to ensure that we can stay Covid-secure and still offer the students a face-to-face learning experience in our world-class facilities. While live events are on pause, our students are still able to work on real-world shows to develop their skills so that they are ready for when we get started up with public-facing gigs again. This opportunity to work with the BBC is just one of the ways we are maintaining the ‘Do if for Real’ ethos that Confetti is built on.”
The blended approach has helped Live & Technical Events students continue their practical studies and be prepared for life after graduation, as student Jamie Lawrence explains:
‘It’s a shame about the lack of events that are happening at the moment, but we’re fortunate in that we continue to have the same amount of practical sessions as we would have done before March 2020.”
