New to Nottingham and Confetti? Discover the perks of both!

Thursday August 23, 2018

Nottingham is a city which thrives on creativity, making it the perfect spot for games, media and music students. It is a city renowned for its music scene and nightlife alongside television and film opportunities. We are Nottingham Trent University’s specialist partner, and as a degree student, you’ll have access to their award-winning student radio station Fly FM, as well as its student magazine Platform and the incredible opportunities offered to media students throughout the city. These include a brand new partnership with Nottingham Forest Football Club and our friends at Notts TV – Nottingham’s local TV channel.

Getting Involved

Joining societies at NTU is a great opportunity to meet new people, organise socials and gain hands-on experience to prepare you for your future career prospects. NTU’s award-winning student radio station Fly FM runs 24/7 and received 6 nominations in the Student Radio Awards in 2017, winning in 2 categories. Whether you’re interested in presenting, producing or marketing, joining Fly FM is a fantastic way to explore the world of radio. You can listen-in and find out more here.

WIRE

If you’re interested in blogging or hoping to build a career in journalism, writing for NTU’s student magazine Platform or our student magazine WIRE is another exciting chance to get on board and refine your writing or design skills. This is a great opportunity to discover your strengths and expand your interests.

Both societies organise socials and events around Nottingham- a great way to create friendships with likeminded people and explore the immense nightlife scene that Nottingham has to offer. No previous experience is required to join these societies, making this a perfect opportunity to begin your journey as a student-journalist. If there isn’t a society for you, you can start one up yourself. All you need are 10 other students that would be interested in joining.

Nightlife

Nottingham is renowned for its bustling nightlife and live-music scene. Whether you’re all about alternative rock and indie bands, crazy about clubbing or just prefer pints at the pub – Nottingham has a venue for you.

Rough Trade

Rough Trade is a hub of Nottingham’s music and art scene- in the day you can scour the shop shelves for edgy merch and various vinyl records. Upstairs, an urban bar provides live music events, socials and art pop-ups. Frequent free-entry is also a bonus on the student budget!

Jam Café

A cosy, intimate and unique bar hidden in Hockley, Jam Café has been a Nott’s fave since it opened in 2008. Serving craft beer and cheap cocktails and with alternative bands performing regularly, this is definitely a special spot for indie-music lovers. If you’re confident enough, you can even try your hand at the open-mic night and show support for other creative locals on-stage.

Rock City

Rock City is Nottingham’s best-known nightclub venue. Opening in 1980, it has since held a plethora of gigs and events with some of the UK’s biggest names in music. Doubling up as a club, it holds weekly student-nights and is a hotspot for society socials. Rock City is a must for Nottingham’s student music scene! Warning – fancy footwear not recommended due to the notorious sticky floor.
