On Tuesday 20 March our student bands battled it out with acts from NTU at Trent Rocks, held at Nottingham Trent Students’ Union. Hundreds of people watched on as nine bands (five from Confetti) showcased their musical talents to a judges’ table featuring representatives from Confetti, Denizen Artists and Nusic.
Winners: Clonk!
After a superb energetic performance from our college-level music performance students Clonk!, the punk rock band fended off close competition to win the judges vote, and will open the Confetti stage at Splendour Festival later this year. Our degree-level music performance students rounded off the top three, with contemporary country singer Bria Buxton taking second spot, followed by our indie rock band Black Cats and Magpies. Haze, Guy Ellerton and Holly Taylor-Gamble rounded off our student performers and on another day, all could’ve claimed spots in the top three.
Artist developer Spencer Wells from Denizen Artists was on the judges’ table. He’s previously signed artists to major labels including James Morison and was impressed with this year’s performers:
“It was a great night where all the artists stepped up their game; the bar was high on performance and raw talent.”
Our Live and Technical Events degree students planned and managed the setup of the event, and applied their fantastic skills throughout the show to put on a great event. Undergraduate Live and Technical Events Course Leader Rob Baldock thought his students had worked extremely hard leading up to, and during the event:
“The Trent Rocks event was an excellent opportunity for our BSc and FdSc Live and Technical Events students to showcase the skills they have developed on the course. They all worked extremely efficiently with slick, 5-minute changeovers to deliver an impressive show.”
Denizen’s Kristi Genovese was also on the judges’ panel and was happy to see our students have so much responsibility throughout the show, and the quality of the bands gave her a difficult choice:
“It was great to see students getting involved with the artist liaison and stage management. Everything ran really smoothly. As for the bands there is definitely some talent there which made our decision really hard! A great evening!”
Overall it was a fantastic night for all students, staff and guests, and we can’t wait to see what talent will be on show in 2019!
