Games Art Exhibition

Our second-year Games Art degree students have put together this fantastic exhibition of industry-inspired artwork to raise awareness of SpecialEffect; a UK-based charity who use video games and other technologies to enhance the quality of life for people with disabilities.

The exhibition is not only an opportunity to raise money for the charity, but has also given students experience of carrying out a creative brief from start to finish. This included all the skills involved in arranging an exhibition, learning copyright laws, and putting their professionalism to the test by completing a real-life brief.

We hope you enjoy this small taster of the extraordinary art our students came up with! Please follow Confetti’s social media for details of the upcoming exhibition of industry-inspired Games Artwork!

Okami-Inspired Pokémon Ukiyo-e scroll paintings, watercolour, paper, 200cmx88cm

“I wanted to take inspiration from traditional Japanese mediums while tailoring it to newer media with Japanese ties such as Pokémon. To commemorate the release of Pokémon Sword and Shield (2019), I wanted to pay homage to the main mythical Pokémon, Zacian and Zamazenta. Since I felt that it fit with the colour scheme and theme of the style, I also depicted Reshiram from Pokémon: Black and White (2011). My main specialty is digital character design, so I took on traditional media as a way to challenge myself and add uniquity to my work, as well as add variety to my portfolio.”

“Taking inspiration from ‘Nakayoshi’s Magazine’, a company who has produced work from well known artist; Naoko Takeuchi, creator of the Sailor Moon manga series. The intended effect is to bring immersive nostalgia from the innocent perspective of a young girl absorbed in her childhood and the concept of romance. From details of the packaging, trinkets and placement, I want you to be paused in the moment of her return home, eager to read and dream with her new comic magazines.”

“Working in the style of 80s shōnen manga, heavily influenced by Hirohiko Araki’s JoJo’s Bizarre Adventure (1987-) series, Archer created industry-inspired art, taking inspiration from Bethesda’s Fallout 4 (2015). The presentation of Fallout characters, a series known for its serious presentation and depictions of themes, combined with the intense and almost homo-erotic poses of this style creates an interesting contrast in Archer’s work, with these serious-natured characters in these epic and dynamic poses presented as parodies of themselves.”

The subject of Owen’s artwork is heavily focused on the mecha genre due to his avid love for the design of robots within the science-fiction sphere, and, for the exhibition, he decided to create transformative work by generating new ideas and adding them to a previously existing universe; this being one of the most successful mecha shows created due to its longevity in popular culture. Owen chose to create artwork inspired by the Mobile Suit Gundam universe as it’s the franchise he feels most passionate about, and he feels that this could also bring more variation to the event due to it being a more obscure choice for industry-inspired art.

This piece is a combination of two different game series: Hollow Knight and Dark Souls, with Hollow Knight being the primary influence. This is due to James falling in love with Hollow Knight’s charming art style. The piece features the characters Artorias and Gael from the Dark Souls series, rendered in the art style of Hollow Knight with the titular Hollow Knight included as well. These characters were all included together as they all share themes and story elements, in that each character sacrifices themselves for a greater cause, but said sacrifice ultimately corrupts them and perverts them towards madness. This piece was created in Adobe Photoshop and was created using a wide variety of digital painting techniques and custom brushes to replicate Hollow Knight’s charming art style.

Lewis is currently more of a digital artist, however growing up he started traditionally using marker pens and paints. His work is largely influenced by watching cartoons on TV whilst growing up and trying to recreate the characters. Lewis uses Photoshop, Maya and Zbrush to produce his 2D and 3D work.

“The work produced for the exhibition is industry-inspired artwork from Sonic the Hedgehog. I wanted to make the character more human by giving him clothes and making him for realistic-looking.”

This is anticipatory work for the upcoming title Rune Factory 5; I have used traditional medium to suit the style and themes of farming from the series, using colours associated with the countryside, such as browns and greens.“

Working mainly with digital drawing, Christian uses line art as a way to take Warframe Characters and turn them into a fantasy character inspired by Dungeons and Dragons, as both are his main areas of interest; he takes the main concepts of the Warframe character and uses that as a base for a Dungeons and Dragons character’s race and class. For example: Chroma is based on a Dragon and has the potential to deal high amounts of damage and taking a few hits, so as a DnD character his race could be Dragonborn and his class could be a Paladin.

Brought up in gloomy Nottingham where the sun doesn’t very often shine, Ryan’s work regularly reflects darker tones not using bright, cheerful colours. However, when the sun does shine it makes it all the more special and everyone under it a lot happier. Which can also be seen in a couple of his pieces. Since a very young age Ryan has been obsessed with the world of science fiction growing from Star Wars, into Halo, and now his most recent obsession Warhammer 40k. Gaining influence and inspiration from all of them every day.

James primarily works in Adobe Photoshop, but also has experience with Autodesk Maya, ZBrush, Adobe Illustrator and has been doing traditional drawing from a young age. As his mother was an artist, art has been a very big part of his life and throughout the years he has been developing and improving his style to get to where he is now. James has always had an interest in realistic looking games and this has heavily influenced his digital painting style. He now specialises in environment art bringing a new look to the landscapes found within a franchise he is very fond of and continues to develop these further into his own unique art style.

“I find myself heavily influenced by two areas in the process of making art; the first being the horror genre and the second being the abstract art style. As is indicated in this piece my vision is to merge these two influences into one concept. This fan art is based on Dead By Daylight, a horror game that situates classic 80’s killers into a mystical new world. By taking a handful of these characters and drawing them into an abstract environment, I feel as though I can breathe a new meaning into the horror genre by highlighting the emotive touch horror often depicts.”

Being largely influenced by three major outlets being; Comics, Movies and Music. Tom uses all three of these in his work. Many of his pieces being a blend of high fantasy and punk music in a comic book-esque style. For the pieces displayed within this exhibit, the movie side is more prevalent. If not for this path Tom would have pursued film making so this is his way of mixing those two passions. Within this exhibit he tried to move away from the comfort zone of comic style wizards shredding on electric guitars into a more stylized realism approach reminiscent of classic movie posters.

Street Fighter Inspired Digital Artwork

To showcase his appreciation of Street Fighter games and his love of the character concepts and themes, Felix has recreated characters from within the game in his own image using stylistic digital painting techniques. “I refrain from blending my palettes too finely as I feel it can reduce detail in my work. Instead I practice working closely with each area of a piece in order to intricately piece together its textures stroke by stroke. Realism is something I used to avoid and so this piece holds its place on my journey to improve my ability to create realistic pieces.
