Nick Halkes of XL Records talks about his progress through the music industry

My last session on Day 3 of Industry Week was delivered by XL Records’ very own Nick Halkes.
Nick initially knew he wanted to be an entertainer, putting on ‘mobile discos” from the age of 12, using generic equipment to entertain his friends. It was from here that he managed to start to build up his equipment and in turn his fan-base.

Nick was then opened up to the opportunity to travel, which he embraced with open arms, reaping him the joys of City Life, fulfilled with exciting resources and characters. This made me think about branching out to open up new doors.

Nick worked as a club DJ in the 60’s and travelled to party-capital, Ibiza, in the 80’s to put on shows and DJ.

Nick then approached XL Records, seeking a job role in any available position. He started out his career as a less ‘glamorous’ Club Promoter. Nick expressed to us the domino effect which resulted in him becoming the determined business man that he is today. Throughout his career, Nick had copious chances to work with a wide range of people in a broad horizon of job titles, predominantly A&R. Probably the most noted achievement to date for Nick is the signing of band The Prodigy. Being from a dance and electro background, Nick helped to develop the band and always wanted them to succeed from the very beginning.

Nicks success also includes a Top 10 hit and the chance to work with EMI.
The session ended with questions and the chance to network with Nick, which we embraced.
