Mental Health Awareness Week took place from Monday 13 May – Sunday 19 May 2024. The theme of this year was all about movement and moving more for our mental health. Read on to learn more and find out how you can get involved.
What is Mental Health Awareness Week?
Every year, Mental Health Awareness Week gives us an opportunity to unite and it emphasises the importance of prioritising our own mental well-being, as well as others. It aims to break down stigmas and to better understand and support each other’s mental health.
Moving your body
Being physically active has so many benefits for both our bodies and minds. We understand that there are challenges that might hold us back, like accessibility, busy schedules, financial constraints, limited open spaces. That’s why it’s great to explore how you can get moving—it’s different for everyone!
Take a look at the Mental Health UK website for tips on overcoming these obstacles to staying active!

Flourish Gardening Session
Tuesday 14 May | 2pm – 2.45pm | 3pm – 3.45pm
Support Student Services and Estates with gardening on the roof top terrace and in the courtyard. Spending time in nature is a fantastic way to boost your mental health, easing stress and anxiety. Gardening adds the bonus of moving your body which is what this week is all about!
Stonebridge City Farm Walk
Wednesday 15 May | 12pm – 2pm
Come along with Student Services for a walk to Stonebridge City Farm and enjoy free entry to meet the various animals. Research shows that spending time with animals can lower cortisol levels (a stress hormone) and decrease blood pressure. Other studies have also found that animals can reduce loneliness, increase feelings of social support, and boost your mood.
Crochet Corner
Thursday 16 May | 2pm – 4pm
Join Student Services for a class in learning how to crochet. Materials will be provided, or you’re welcome to bring your own. Both knitting and crocheting involve a meditative and repetitive process that helps to centre the mind, slowing down the nervous system and decreasing levels of anxiety and stress hormones like cortisol in the body.
