A group of Confetti degree students have recently produced and launched the fantastic Confetti Album 2020.
We spoke to El Brown – one of the artists featured on the album – about the story behind her track, and how she found the experience as a whole…
What’s your name?
My name is El Brown.
What’s the name of your band/alias?
I go by El for all music things!
What made you choose Confetti to study music?
I chose Confetti to do a BTEC in Music Performance and Songwriting straight out of school. I liked the vibe of Notts with its live music scene being a huge pull. Continuing on after college to do my degree just made sense.
Who inspired you to make your own music?
I’ve been writing music since I was a kid – admittedly I was terrible when I was younger! I was very inspired by musicals, wanting to write big, powerful songs with big, powerful emotions. I think this is why my songs are so story-driven.
How would you define your sound as an artist – by genre or anything else?
I try not to define my sound, as weird as that may sound. It’s emotional and intimate.
What’s the story – and meaning – behind your track chosen for the Confetti Album 2020?
Nanette is the story of someone coming to terms with the fact that they’re being cheated on. But – they are so deeply in love with this person that they just can’t leave. It’s not a situation I’ve ever been in – and if I could tell this person to just leave Nanette then I would.
If you could choose one place to perform this track where would it be and why?
Without saying the obvious and naming festivals all over, I think that I just want to play Nanette sat down at a gathering – maybe a house party – and have everyone sit down with me and just listen.
If you could be the support for any artist in the world on their tour, who would you choose?
Drew Monson, without doubt.
What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from the recording process on this track?
That things take time and go wrong.
What advice would you have for someone wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Be nice to yourself. And don’t be scared to work with other people. You don’t need to do everything yourself!
