Confetti Album artist interview series – Sam Barker

Tuesday June 30, 2020

A group of Confetti degree students have recently produced and launched the fantastic Confetti Album 2020.

We spoke to Sam Barker – one of the artists featured on the album – about the story behind his track, and how he found the experience as a whole…

What’s your name and what course do you study at Confetti?
My name’s Sam Barker, and I’m on the Music Performance and Songwriting college course.

Who inspired you to make your own music?
I’m inspired by the blues, rock and psychedelic bands of the 60s and 70s like The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, Cream and Clapton’s other bands. I’d say this shows in my songs as they are a blend of all my inspirations.

What’s the story – and meaning – behind your track chosen for the Confetti Album 2020?
Message to The Media was written out of anger towards social media site and other big corporations that control how we perceive the world. I wrote the song when I was 15 but I’ve only just had the chance to record it with more than just my acoustic guitar.

If you could choose one place to perform this track where would it be and why?
If I could have performed it anywhere it would be at Woodstock surrounded by all the hippies and the atmosphere of the 60s, or opening for the Rolling Stones at the Marquee Club in ‘71 surrounded by the guys who defined the term ‘rockstar’.

What’s the most important thing you’ve learned from the recording process on this track?
From recording this track I learnt that you can’t let anything stop the track from achieving its potential.

What advice would you give to others wanting to follow in your footsteps?
Advice I’d give to people who want to do the same thing as me is do what you want, not what others do.
