Pride month is all about celebrating LGBTQ+ equality, identity and visibility by creating a supportive community where everyone can express themselves freely. It shows those who feel nervous or are persecuted that they are not alone. Pride is also a time to reflect on those who fought for our rights and remember those we lost along the way.
Why is Pride important?
Pride month is celebrated every June to recognise the accomplishments of the LGBTQ+ rights movement and its LGBTQ+ advocates. It’s about the people in the LGBTQ+ community who have fought and continue to fight for equality.
It must not be forgotten that the first Pride was not a celebration, it was born out of a struggle during the Stonewall Riots in 1969 and was led by queer people of colour.
We celebrate every year to show that as a community we are moving forwards and not backwards, that everyone should feel safe and secure in who they are.
Celebrate Pride at Confetti
Join us at our Pride Event on Monday 10 June across various areas in DMH, for a range of musical performances, fun game tournaments, and more. Stay tuned for details about this year’s event in student notices and on campus screens.
LGBTQ+ Community at Confetti
Each year we host a number of LGBTQ+ Socials for students to meet and socialise with one another.
We’d love for students to have a real input in these events, so if you’d like to get involved in our socials next year, please email us at LGBTQPLUS@confetti.ac.uk
Nottingham Pride
Notts Pride are hosting their annual celebrations on Saturday 27 July. Get involved in the lively march through the city centre, explore the market filled with stalls from local communities and organisations, and enjoy a variety of performances on the main stage from spoken word poets, musicians and drag artists.
