A network of caves left untouched for over 120 years and previously unknown to historians has been discovered under our Digital Media Hub site.
While excavating land for our new £9.1m Digital Media Hub, builders uncovered a network of caves that completely changed Nottingham’s history from the medieval period right through to the 19th century.
This area of the city centre has never been archaeologically excavated. Lying immediately outside the medieval defences (which existed where Lower Parliament Street is now located) the excavation has provided important new information about what was happening immediately outside the town up to 700 years ago.
Archaeologists have digitally mapped the newly discovered caves using high-tech laser scanners and are creating a full 3D image of the finds – preserving it for future generations.
